Growing up in a close-knit community, Tyler volunteered with a youth group for eight years and co-led it for three years. He began his postsecondary studies at Grande Prairie Regional College, where he served as vice-chair of his college’s academic council, participated in student council, and helped run the Model United Nations club. After transferring to the University of Alberta, Tyler participated in the undergraduate philosophy association. While studying full-time, he spent over a year as the primary caregiver for his grandfather in rural Alberta. Tyler graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. As a McCall MacBain Scholar, he began a Master of Arts in Philosophy (Bioethics) at McGill.
