During an Honours B.A. in Political Science at McGill University, Somaya served as a volunteer program director for World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and created a postsecondary mentorship program. She undertook a year-long internship in France, where she worked for a municipal government and volunteered for local organizations supporting migrant communities all whilst studying political science in Strasbourg.

After graduating from McGill, Somaya participated in the one-year Parliamentary Internship Program in Ottawa before returning to Montreal to study law.
