During an Honours B.A. in Political Science at McGill University, Somaya was a volunteer program director for World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and created a post-secondary mentorship program. She also undertook a one-year internship in France, where she worked for a municipal government and volunteered for local organizations supporting migrant communities all whilst studying political science in Strasbourg. After graduating, she participated in the one-year Parliamentary Internship Program in Ottawa before returning to Montreal to study law.
